Joy Nevertheless

In a deep dream, he was told

to enter the first ship he saw on the water.

The knight woke to a fullness of light and, close by,

a strand he could walk and look to sea.

The first ship to come had no oars,

no sail, and floated free on currents

that gathered all the waters. He climbed aboard.

He drifted to an epiphany, round as the world:

Here is your holiness; here your connection.

The vessel compassed the sweet spot of his soul.

With joy undiminished, he learned the ship

had a greater hold on others, pure spirits,

one who would enter the next realm like an angel.

Lancelot’s passage was nevertheless complete.

He could go in peace.
